John Hansard Gallery and Skate Southampton invite you to explore the design of 'Scribble', a new interactive sculpture trail planned for Southampton in May 2026. 'Scribble' is a series of Corten steel sculptures intended to encourage climbing, skating, resting and play.
You will work with scaled 3D printed modular components used during the design process. By connecting and adjusting these elements, you can explore how different design choices affect structure, balance, scale and use, as well as how materials and finishes change how the sculptures look and feel. You can sketch ideas, try out combinations and share your thoughts on how the sculptures might work in public spaces.
Hands on exploration and discussion will be supported by the John Hansard Gallery's Engagement Team alongside Skate Southampton. A prototype 'Scribble' sculpture installed at Highfield Campus will allow you to experience the full physical scale of a 'Scribble' art form and consider how it could function once installed in Southampton's public spaces.
Through making, colouring, and conversation, you will gain insight into how interactive artworks are designed and how public input can help shape the design of artworks for the city.
