University of Southampton's Spaceflight Society (SUSF) is a student-led group dedicated to sharing the science and engineering behind all things related to spaceflight, such as launching rockets, building rovers, firing liquid rocket engines, and more.

In this activity, you will design, build, and launch your own straw rocket. Using simple materials such as paper, fins, and a nose cone, you'll create a small rocket that fits over a straw and launch it using your breath. You can test your rocket, adjust the design, and see how changes affect how far and how straight it flies.

You will learn how rockets move using basic ideas like forces, mass, and stability, and discover how engineers use testing and redesign to improve performance. No prior knowledge is needed - guidance will be available throughout, and the activity is suitable for a wide range of ages.

This hands-on activity shows how simple materials can be used to explore the same engineering ideas behind real rockets.
